The so called Africa-Plastic-Road Project has to do with the ambitious idea of crossing the African continent north to south, following the western coastline. The trip is starting from Tangier, Morocco to be ending in Cape Town, South Africa; in between, thousands of kilometers, extremely diverse situations and territories.

The Africa-Plastic-Road Project is not just an adventurous journey, it is a mission as well. Each step of this trip will be infact documented in detail through reports and documentaries, in order to raise awareness regarding the serious situation of plastic waste in many parts of Africa. Through images and stories, we will be shown not only the devastating impact of this environmental crisis, but also the possible solutions coming from an intelligent and responsible recycling of plastic materials.

The two main characters of this story are Edoardo Alberti, an italian video maker, and his friend Sebastiano Busolin, an expert mechanic, who will face this challenge aboard their Yamaha Tenere 700s.

The Plastic Situation in Africa

Africa, often considered as the vital lung of our planet, is unfortunately known also for the abundance of plastic material polluting the entire continent, including the most remote areas. In fact, Africa holds the record for the largest number of open-air landfills, that have devastating environmental impact on a global scale.

In these dumpsites, also home to more than 10,000 people living amid dirt and garbage, human life is all about looking for “valuable” materials. Women and girls spend their days rummaging through piles of garbage looking for iron, aluminum, electrical materials, and other items, in order to resell them for spare change or a portion of food. Unfortunately, plastic is not among the materials considered to be of “value,” thus remaining abandoned, compacted on roads until it mixes with the ground, carried by the wind or burned in open fires, releasing harmful substances into the air.

The reason why iMilani is supporting the project

iMilani, concretely engaged with numerous activities of sustainability and environmental protection, has decided to endorse the Africa Plastic Road project for 3 main objectives:

Documenting the plastic situation in Africa

Providing a clear and direct view of the impact that plastic waste has on the continent.

Raising community awareness of the issue

Creating awareness about plastic pollution and encouraging concrete actions to address the problem.

Promoting smart recycling

Exploring solutions to recycle some of the plastic waste, turning it into useful resources for local people.

Join iMilani and follow Africa Plastic Road together!

We will watch Edoardo and Sebastiano's journey, documenting the situations they find on their way.
